The Facts About Facebook and the Mafia Wars Game

Few things in American culture hold the mysterious – and sometimes baffling – allure of the mafia world despite the fact that at its heart the mafia was just a very big crime operation that survived on fear and violence. The mob world holds fascinating for many people – everything from the hierarchy to the fact that they could have someone beaten up or murdered and then go out for dinner the same night as if nothing happened is interesting to some. This fascinating is what helped make mafia movies like Goodfellas and the now infamous Godfather series into American classics, why books are still being written about people like Al Capone and why mob TV show The Sopranos is one of the most decorated shows in television history. This interest has even spread into video games like the Grand Theft Auto series and things like the Mafia Wars game on Facebook.

Facebook has many games but the Mafia Wars game is one of their most popular. The game literally gets millions of hits every single day from people logging on to play. The company that owns the Mafia Wars game, Zynga, even makes real money off of it. They do this by selling things like health or exclusive content that isn’t necessary to the game but makes it easier – players can decide whether or not to invest their own money.

But why does the Mafia Wars game draw in so many people and what is it really about? The Mafia Wars game follows the life of a poor Italian kid who grew up in the Bronx who’s determined to make it in the New York City mob. This kid is at the very heart of the story and remains there throughout the game; players assume his identity so that they can become part of the mob. At the very start, the player joins the mob at the very bottom of the ranks, leaving plenty of room for growth.

As he completes jobs, he moves up the ranks and eventually is in a position where he can assume control of the most powerful crime family in the game’s “world” – that’s basically the goal of the Mafia Wars game. The jobs themselves are brutal – breaking into or vandalizing buildings; blowing things up; robbing stores and banks; beating people up; and of course “icing” a select few who get in the way. The game also has a lot of social integration – players have their friends join their mob so that when they go up against bosses or other mobs someone has their back. This combination of things has turned the Mafia Wars game into a hit.
